State History Day 2013!

          The History Club and specifically, the History Day girls, had a big day this last Saturday. The History Day competition is an intense research project (including a process paper and annotated bibliography) that focuses on a topic within a given theme. This year's theme was "A Turning Point in History". 30,000 students from across Minnesota complete projects each year. The regional competition was held in mid-March in Duluth. Moose Lake had four students compete at regionals this year. In her first year, Maddy Gamst did an exhibit board titled, "Dorothy Molter: The Root Beer Lady and the BWCWA." In their second years, Nicole Tekippe completed a documentary titled, "Sister Kenny: A Miracle for Polio" and Ellie Riihiluoma and Lauren Ross completed a documentary titled, "No Smoking or No Service: Establishing Non Smoking Restaurants in Minnesota." Ellie, Lauren and Nicole moved on to the state competition which was held this past Saturday at the UofM-Twin Cities. Only 1,200 students move on to the state competition and only 30 each in the documentary category.
At state, students present at first round judging that includes a number of questions from judges. Then, you wait. And wait. And finally, they project a list of students who make it to second round judging. (This is huge as all students who make second round will either place or receive honorable mention.) Second round judging is intense and an interesting process. They have three rooms.  A first place room, which includes all those projects that scored first in first round judging, a second place room and a third place room. From there, two from the second place and one from the third place room flood into the first place room in which they are judged in competition to the first place projects. Nicole made second round and was placed in the third place room. Ellie and Lauren's project was placed in the first place room. They only had to show their project once. From the second and third place rooms, they only take three projects which then move on and need to be presented AGAIN. Nicole's project was selected to the first place room!! Essentially, what this means is that both projects were in the top 8 in the state!!!!! From judging, we headed to Williams Arena where the awards ceremony was held.
I'm soooooooo proud to announce that Nicole received an honorable mention (top 8!!) in the senior individual documentary category this year. Her documentary is awesome and has Minnesota connections. Lauren and Ellie received THIRD PLACE which is an ALTERNATE TO NATIONALS held in Washington, DC!!!! They competed in the senior group documentary category. Their video focused on Art's and Moose Lake as being a catalyst in the no smoking in restaurants movement in Minnesota. These are huge huge huge accomplishments and if you see the girls, please congratulate them. They truly put Moose Lake on the radar by placing these last few years, especially considering most History Day participants have History Day in their schools as part of their curriculum, not to mention most are huge metro schools like DeLasalle, the Blake School, Minneapolis South, etc. It's seriously crazy!! It was a very exciting day and I'm extremely proud of them.

Spring 2013 Updates!

Wow, the year has flown by! Unfortunately, instead of flowers and green grass we find ourselves greeted by snow and clouds. But no worries, there is a reason to smile again. The History Club has been busy with loads of activities! Here are some updates and information on upcoming events.


1. HISTORY DAY

This is the third year, Moose Lake students have participated in the Minnesota History Day Competition. Four students took part in the regional History Day event at UMD on Saturday, March 16. This year's theme was "A Turning Point in History". All students did an incredible job! Maddy Gamst, a seventh grade student,  created an exhibit titled,  "Dorothy Molter: Root Beer Lady and the BWCWA." Nicole Tekippe, a ninth grade student, created a documentary on "Sister Elizabeth Kenny: A Miracle for Polio." Finally, Ellie Riihiluoma and Lauren Ross featured a local story, and created a documentary called, "No Smoking or No Service: Establishing Non-Smoking Restaurants in Minnesota."Nicole, Ellie and Lauren are advancing to the state competition on Saturday, May 4th at the University of MN-Twin Cities. If you see any of the girls, be sure to congratulate all of their hard work!!!

2.  THE DEPOT

There will be a History Club meeting THIS FRIDAY at 8 am in Miss J's room. We will be discussing the Depot and activities there. Students have been working (or need to get working!) on their exhibits on country schools for the Depot. This Friday, we will be going to the Depot to do further research. Students should finish their projects by the end of May to coordinate with the opening of the museum!

3. PERU!!

History Club members, along with Spanish students and Seniorita, have an opportunity to travel to Peru June 9-15, 2015. There will be an informational parent meeting on THURSDAY, MAY 9 at 5:30 in Ms. Olson's (Seniorita's) room. Please attend if you are interested....it's going to be a great trip!!

History Club Visits the Minnesota History Center!

Last Friday, students in the History Club had the opportunity to do primary and secondary research at the Minnesota History Center in St.Paul. It was an amazing experience as students were expected to act and think like historical researchers. They were able to request and reference various primary sources only available at the History Center. When students weren't conducting research on their Country School project for the Depot or their History Day projects, they were able to explore the History Center's many exhibits. It was a great day!

WINTER 2013 UPDATES

We're already half way done with the year and there is still much to do for History Club. Here are a few udpates:

1---Field trip was postponed to next Friday, February 8th. The bus will leave at 8:10 and return around 5. Students will need to bring their own lunch unless they wish to eat to eat the History Center's cafe.

2---HISTORY DAY PARTICIPANTS***Regional competition is Saturday, March 16th at UMD. Students need to decide which medium they are using for the project (And let Miss J know) as registration is due March 5th. Students should have completed secondary source research. State competition is Sunday, May 4th. 

3--Country School Projects for the Depot in ML need to be completed by May. Students will hopefully be able to gather primary sources on our field trip and will need to complete local interviews this spring. Look for the exhibit this summer at the Depot!

And finally, in big news.....the History Club and Spanish students have decided to take a joint trip to PERU!!!!! Gear up for summer 2015! We're hoping to have a student/parent meeting this spring. Look in the bulletin or ask Miss J/Senorita for more information. 

December Notes

The History Club has been busy using their meeting times as research for the LMC display, Moose Lake Area Historical Society exhibits and History Day. The History Club will be working on these various projects most of the year. 

Students will be going on a research field trip the Minnesota History Center in St. Paul on Friday, January 11th. This is a fabulous event as students will be able to work with research librarians and utilize the enormous selection of resources as the History Center. 

The History Day regional event at UMD has recently been changed to SATURDAY, MARCH 16th. For the last two years, Moose Lake High School students have excelled at this event. We're hoping to keep the tradition alive! Students should have a topic and begin secondary source research ASAP!!

The next History Club meeting will be this Friday (December 14th) at 8am in the HS Lab.

A New Year

The History Club is back at it and as always, staying quite busy! A few updates:

1) The History Club is under new leadership!  Ellie Riihiluoma remains president, Mercedes Moffett is Vice President and Payton Grescyzk is Secretary/Treasurer. These ladies will do a fine job of organizing meetings and making important decisions!

2) The History Club will no longer be doing newsletters. Instead, we're staying busy with the following activities: Our partnership with the ML Area Historical Society brings field trips, displays, research, and events. We will also be looking to join the National History Club and continue to participate in the History Day project. With the remodeling of the Library Media Center, we also have the opportunity to create a monthly display on local history or local ties to large historical events. The History Club has also decided to look into taking another trip. This time, THE OREGON TRAIL!!

3) Members of ML History Club recently went to the Depot to discuss project ideas and catch some new exhibits. Students have the opportunity to participate in a vintage clothing fashion show this spring. Here are a few photos from the evening:
