WINTER 2013 UPDATES

We're already half way done with the year and there is still much to do for History Club. Here are a few udpates:

1---Field trip was postponed to next Friday, February 8th. The bus will leave at 8:10 and return around 5. Students will need to bring their own lunch unless they wish to eat to eat the History Center's cafe.

2---HISTORY DAY PARTICIPANTS***Regional competition is Saturday, March 16th at UMD. Students need to decide which medium they are using for the project (And let Miss J know) as registration is due March 5th. Students should have completed secondary source research. State competition is Sunday, May 4th. 

3--Country School Projects for the Depot in ML need to be completed by May. Students will hopefully be able to gather primary sources on our field trip and will need to complete local interviews this spring. Look for the exhibit this summer at the Depot!

And finally, in big news.....the History Club and Spanish students have decided to take a joint trip to PERU!!!!! Gear up for summer 2015! We're hoping to have a student/parent meeting this spring. Look in the bulletin or ask Miss J/Senorita for more information. 

December Notes

The History Club has been busy using their meeting times as research for the LMC display, Moose Lake Area Historical Society exhibits and History Day. The History Club will be working on these various projects most of the year. 

Students will be going on a research field trip the Minnesota History Center in St. Paul on Friday, January 11th. This is a fabulous event as students will be able to work with research librarians and utilize the enormous selection of resources as the History Center. 

The History Day regional event at UMD has recently been changed to SATURDAY, MARCH 16th. For the last two years, Moose Lake High School students have excelled at this event. We're hoping to keep the tradition alive! Students should have a topic and begin secondary source research ASAP!!

The next History Club meeting will be this Friday (December 14th) at 8am in the HS Lab.

A New Year

The History Club is back at it and as always, staying quite busy! A few updates:

1) The History Club is under new leadership!  Ellie Riihiluoma remains president, Mercedes Moffett is Vice President and Payton Grescyzk is Secretary/Treasurer. These ladies will do a fine job of organizing meetings and making important decisions!

2) The History Club will no longer be doing newsletters. Instead, we're staying busy with the following activities: Our partnership with the ML Area Historical Society brings field trips, displays, research, and events. We will also be looking to join the National History Club and continue to participate in the History Day project. With the remodeling of the Library Media Center, we also have the opportunity to create a monthly display on local history or local ties to large historical events. The History Club has also decided to look into taking another trip. This time, THE OREGON TRAIL!!

3) Members of ML History Club recently went to the Depot to discuss project ideas and catch some new exhibits. Students have the opportunity to participate in a vintage clothing fashion show this spring. Here are a few photos from the evening:

4) Meetings will continue to be held every other Friday at 8am in Miss Jackson's room. Check the bulletin to stay up to date!

History Club does DC!

Finally, two months later, details on the latest adventure by the History Club have arrived!

Fourteen students arrived at Moose Lake HS at 1 am on Tuesday, June 12th to head to the cities to fly to Washington, DC for four fun-filled days. After minor chaos (the bus didn't show up for the Hermantown group and the airline was forced to delay the flight in order for them to make it) we were on our way to DC. We had the most uncharacteristically beautiful (NO HUMIDITY!!) weather known to the east coast. It was wonderful! The trip was full of long days, loads of sightseeing, food and souvenirs. I felt extremely blessed with the group of kids I was fortunate enough to take on this trip. They were amazing!! The trip was so fun. As they often say, pictures are worth more than words and so I'm going to stop writing and just send you to our album. Let me know if there are any issues while viewing these images.

Washington, DC in FIVE days!!!!

Yes, the time has finally come....members of the Moose Lake History Club are on their way to DC in only a few short days. A few last minute details:


1) All students will have an ID. If they don't have their permit, Miss Jackson made them a school ID complete with an emergency contact.
2) All students must be at Moose Lake HS at 1:00AM. No, this is not a type-o! We have the luxury of our very own coach bus which intends to leave at 1:30AM. So, please make sure you are on time as we have a lot of last minute checks to make.
3) Students may check a bag to DC for $25RT. If they wish to check a bag, please make sure to give your money to Miss Jackson.
4)Students will call their parents when we land in Minneapolis with an approximate time to pick them up.
5)If there are any questions, please contact Miss Jackson with the number she provided!!
6)Get ready for hot weather, long days, tons of history and loads of fun!!!

History Day STATE 2012!!!!

        Yesterday was the National History Day State Competition for Minnesota. It was held at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities in various buildings. Moose Lake had six students who received scores that were high enough to make it to state. This is a huge feat in itself as 30,000 students participate in regional events and only 1,200 advance to state. State is similar to regionals as the girls had to present their topics and answer judges questions. It was quite a long day as we left ML at 830am and returned home at 1030pm.
Nicole Tekippe was one of hundreds who presented an exhibit board. It was a beautifully done project titled, "Red Scare: American Reaction to Communism in the 1920s." Feel free to stop into my room and check it out! Although this was the second year Moose Lake participated in History Day events it was the first year we had students create performance and documentary projects. Judging for these projects is intense as there are second and final round judging. Both groups advanced to FINAL ROUNDS!!!!!! Everyone was extremely excited.
The awards ceremony was held at Williams Arena. First and Second place projects move onto the National History Day competition held in DC. They also give medals to third, fourth and fifth. Those that made finals (only a select few made it to finals) but didn't place in the top 5 receive honorable mention medals. There were also organizations who sent topical judges to the event and students are awarded with topical prizes.
For the first time, we had groups PLACE!!! The performance by Ellie Riihiluoma, Maddie Geil and Maddie Ross titled "Dorthea Dix: Improving Conditions for the Insane Worldwide" won 4th place (just two away from nationals!). The documentary, "A Burning Rebirth: The 1918 Fire of Moose Lake" by Leah Westmoreland and Lauren Ross received an Honorable Mentionas well as a topical prize (money!) from a trust set up by a group of families from Minnesota. Words can't describe how proud I am of all of these girls who managed to do some amazing things in their FIRST History Day competition. So, thank you to the parents, teachers, Moose Lake Historical Society, school and everyone else who let me steal them from their classes, paid for various items and supported us. It definitely paid off!!!

They did it!!!! History Day State Competition 2012!

Hard work really does pay off. Ask the ladies who participated in last Saturday's History Day Regional competition about it. They're ALL going to STATE!

National History Day is an event where students complete a research project. There are five mediums in which a student can choose to present this research: a paper, website, documentary, exhibit or performance. It is an intense project that includes in-depth research, an annotated bibliography, a process paper and interviews by judges. Last year, Ava and Ryan represented Moose Lake in its first trip to the state competition last spring. This year, six ladies will represent Moose Lake at the state competition on Sunday, April 29th at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. This is a huge honor as there are 30,000 students who participate in regional events and only 1,200 advance to the state competition!

Leah Westmoreland and Lauren Ross will be advancing to state with their documentary: "Rebirth: The 1918 Fire of Moose Lake." This is Leah's second year and Lauren's first year participating in the competition. It's the first time a group from Moose Lake has done a documentary!

Our final group advancing to state is Maddie Geil, Maddie Ross and Ellie Riihiluoma for their performance: "Dorthea Dix: Improving the Conditions of the Insane Worldwide." This is Maddie Geil's second and Maddie Ross and Ellie's first year participating in the competition. This is the first group from Moose Lake to do a performance!

 

Words can't express how proud I am of all of these ladies. It's truly amazing to see the work they have done and the projects they've created. I can't wait to see what state holds for us!
