Washington, DC in FIVE days!!!!

Yes, the time has finally come....members of the Moose Lake History Club are on their way to DC in only a few short days. A few last minute details:


1) All students will have an ID. If they don't have their permit, Miss Jackson made them a school ID complete with an emergency contact.
2) All students must be at Moose Lake HS at 1:00AM. No, this is not a type-o! We have the luxury of our very own coach bus which intends to leave at 1:30AM. So, please make sure you are on time as we have a lot of last minute checks to make.
3) Students may check a bag to DC for $25RT. If they wish to check a bag, please make sure to give your money to Miss Jackson.
4)Students will call their parents when we land in Minneapolis with an approximate time to pick them up.
5)If there are any questions, please contact Miss Jackson with the number she provided!!
6)Get ready for hot weather, long days, tons of history and loads of fun!!!

History Day STATE 2012!!!!

        Yesterday was the National History Day State Competition for Minnesota. It was held at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities in various buildings. Moose Lake had six students who received scores that were high enough to make it to state. This is a huge feat in itself as 30,000 students participate in regional events and only 1,200 advance to state. State is similar to regionals as the girls had to present their topics and answer judges questions. It was quite a long day as we left ML at 830am and returned home at 1030pm.
Nicole Tekippe was one of hundreds who presented an exhibit board. It was a beautifully done project titled, "Red Scare: American Reaction to Communism in the 1920s." Feel free to stop into my room and check it out! Although this was the second year Moose Lake participated in History Day events it was the first year we had students create performance and documentary projects. Judging for these projects is intense as there are second and final round judging. Both groups advanced to FINAL ROUNDS!!!!!! Everyone was extremely excited.
The awards ceremony was held at Williams Arena. First and Second place projects move onto the National History Day competition held in DC. They also give medals to third, fourth and fifth. Those that made finals (only a select few made it to finals) but didn't place in the top 5 receive honorable mention medals. There were also organizations who sent topical judges to the event and students are awarded with topical prizes.
For the first time, we had groups PLACE!!! The performance by Ellie Riihiluoma, Maddie Geil and Maddie Ross titled "Dorthea Dix: Improving Conditions for the Insane Worldwide" won 4th place (just two away from nationals!). The documentary, "A Burning Rebirth: The 1918 Fire of Moose Lake" by Leah Westmoreland and Lauren Ross received an Honorable Mentionas well as a topical prize (money!) from a trust set up by a group of families from Minnesota. Words can't describe how proud I am of all of these girls who managed to do some amazing things in their FIRST History Day competition. So, thank you to the parents, teachers, Moose Lake Historical Society, school and everyone else who let me steal them from their classes, paid for various items and supported us. It definitely paid off!!!

They did it!!!! History Day State Competition 2012!

Hard work really does pay off. Ask the ladies who participated in last Saturday's History Day Regional competition about it. They're ALL going to STATE!

National History Day is an event where students complete a research project. There are five mediums in which a student can choose to present this research: a paper, website, documentary, exhibit or performance. It is an intense project that includes in-depth research, an annotated bibliography, a process paper and interviews by judges. Last year, Ava and Ryan represented Moose Lake in its first trip to the state competition last spring. This year, six ladies will represent Moose Lake at the state competition on Sunday, April 29th at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. This is a huge honor as there are 30,000 students who participate in regional events and only 1,200 advance to the state competition!

Leah Westmoreland and Lauren Ross will be advancing to state with their documentary: "Rebirth: The 1918 Fire of Moose Lake." This is Leah's second year and Lauren's first year participating in the competition. It's the first time a group from Moose Lake has done a documentary!

Our final group advancing to state is Maddie Geil, Maddie Ross and Ellie Riihiluoma for their performance: "Dorthea Dix: Improving the Conditions of the Insane Worldwide." This is Maddie Geil's second and Maddie Ross and Ellie's first year participating in the competition. This is the first group from Moose Lake to do a performance!

 

Words can't express how proud I am of all of these ladies. It's truly amazing to see the work they have done and the projects they've created. I can't wait to see what state holds for us!

Spring into History!

As always, a lot has been happening for the Moose Lake History Club! Here are a few updates:

1) Next History Club Meeting----THIS THURSDAY 3/29. ALL newsletter items are due then.
2) We've been a bit busy, so expect to see a double issue for our next newsletter (February and April!)
3) Our next "Awesome Afternoon" DC fundraiser will be Thursday, April 5th. Thank you for all those who volunteer to help on their free afternoon!
4)WASHINGTON, DC TRIP: There will be a tentative PARENT/STUDENT TRIP meeting Tuesday, May 13th at 6pm. We hope to have the flight information/itinerary at that time. There will also be forms that need to be filled out.
5) Finally, this Saturday (3/31) Moose Lake students will be participating in the Minnesota History Day regional competition. These students have been working very hard on their intense research projects and we wish them well!!

FEBRUARY UPDATES

Wowsers. Time is certainly flying. A few updates for the History Club:

1) MEETING THIS FRIDAY (2/24) AT 8AM IN MISS J'S ROOM. ALL NEWSLETTER ITEMS MUST BE IN TO MADDIE ROSS (HC EMAIL) BY THAT TIME.

2) Fundraisers. Our "Awesome Afternoons" have been successful and smooth operating thanks to the help of our students and Miss Vicki Radzak! To date, we've brought in nearly $1100 in just two afternoons! Thank you for all of your help. We will be having another "Awesome Afternoon" on the next 1/2 day (March 2!).  We also have some ladies (Nicole, Kylee, Courtney and Mercedes) who are selling chocolate covered pretzels----buy yours today!! They are yummmmmmmmy. All money earned through fundraisers will be turned in to Miss J who will then send it to Worldstrides. 

3) HISTORY DAY: The regional event in Duluth is at the end of March which means we need to KICK IT INTO GEAR!!!!! I will open the LMC this Saturday (2/25) from 2-4pm. Students should bring all of their resources and use the time to research. I'm asking that all History Day participants have their projects finished Friday, March 23rd so we have time to tweak and fix anything!

4) Ninth graders in History Club were able to visit the Depot in early January to work on various projects. We got to sort through actual pictures from the 1918 fires. We were also able to view a documentary on the event. It was a great experience! 

Big Things Happening in 2012 for the ML History Club!!

2012. This year certainly has the History Club  keeping busy. Between newsletters, projects, History Day Projects, and DC, students can not get enough of HISTORY! Here's what members have been up to lately:

1) A Holly Jolly Afternoon. Students put on an afternoon of fun and food for elementary students on December 23. It took a lot of energy but everyone enjoyed themselves. We even managed to raise almost $600 for DC!! We hope to put on a few more "fun afternoons" during the upcoming half days. Look for upcoming information!

2) History Day Competition 2012. Last year, four students competed in the National History Day competition and two made it to the state competition held last spring. This year, 11 students attended a FREE history research field trip held at the UMD library. (Thank you MN History Center!) It was a wonderful opportunity for students to work with library staff in acquiring primary and secondary sources. I'm so excited to see the projects they come up with!!

3) Our next History Club is this Friday (1/13) at 8 am!! Also, be on the lookout for the December newsletter as it near completion!

December HISTORY CLUB UPDATES!!

Time is flying and History Club members have been quite busy! Here are a few things to note:


1) History Club continues to stay busy with activities at the Depot. Between the musical, sports schedules and church--it has been difficult to arrange a steady time. A few members are currently working on creating a Virtual Tour for the Depot. We are hoping to partake in more activities after winter break.


2) Our next HC meeting is THIS FRIDAY (December 2nd) at 8 am. Students will discuss newsletter details----the theme for the December Newsletter is Winter Holidays and WWII. Look for the Newsletter at the beginning of January!


3) DC Updates: We've received our preliminary itinerary!!!! Unfortunately due to the earthquake earlier this year, we are still unable to go up into the Washington Memorial. Still, our days are full with anything and everything you could ever want to do in DC. We currently have 20 people attending the trip. Exciting! We will be doing a candy fundraiser as well as a Presidents Day Dance and other activities to help raise money for students attending the trip. 


4) History Day participants should begin their topic selection and secondary source research. We will be (hopefully!) going on a research field trip within the first two weeks of December at UMD. This is a free research trip (thanks to the MN History Center) and a great opportunity to work with library staff and a larger selection of sources!


5) The first newsletter is FINALLY complete! Have your student bring you a copy!
